The decorative ornamentations of traditional Persian music are essential in the presentation of the basic phrases of the “Radif”, the melodic repertoire of Persian music and improvisation. The successful performance of such phrases is highly dependent on the mastery of these delicate ornamentations.
It is nearly impossible to present either instrumental or vocal music without the use of such ornamentations. It is therefore crucial to study the presented principles in order to meaningfully understand, present, and perform traditional Persian music.
The complexity of these ornamentations has often led to very confusing and even inaccurate notated presentations of such “Tahrirs”. In some cases, notated presentations have either been too simplified or so complicated that the only way to discover the true nature of the melody is by listening to the original recording.
It is true that this form of art music is considered to be an oral tradition. Learning the delicacy of this music through listening does play a very significant role. However, it is very helpful to have the most accurately notated representation of the music in order to increase the capacity to both learn and analyze the presented material.
Over many years of teaching and research, especially in recent years as I have begun to work more directly with students of other nationalities, it has become more important for me to present the most accurately notated representations of these musical ornaments for the Persian Ney.
This process of developing this method of notating traditional Persian music has been a long and effortful process. After many years of research and examination, this book is finally ready to be published.
This method of notation allows students to grasp the melodic complexity of this music in a way that is straightforward and easy to understand. The way that the phrases are put together and presented allows for the gentle unfolding of the essence that lies in the music.
This series is split up in to two chapters: The first chapter consists of practices, melodic corners of the “radif” known as “Gushes”, and improvisational frameworks presented in a non-rhythmic format across many different modes known as “dastgahs”. The second chapter consists of rhythmic melodies such as old songs known as “Tasnifs”, preludes known as “Pishdaramad”, and faster rhythmic pieces known as “Chaharmezrab” and “Reng”.
The whole series is also available in CD format with very high-quality recordings that serve as a listening guide to further assist interested students in integrating the musical repertoire.
