On December 1, every door at Hollyberry Lodge has a paper snowflake on it. Every morning after that, there's another little surprise: swept steps, a scarf on the snowman, a cup of cocoa half gone. Someone at the lodge is being kind in secret, and Gran Hollis wants to say thank you on Christmas Eve. Your detectives help her find out who, one page a night.

Checked so that exactly one person fits every FACT: every other suspect is cleared by two different FACTs, so the mystery still works if you miss a day.

How it works

• One page a night. A short letter from Gran, a FACT box, a 5-minute activity and a Detective Challenge. An 8-year-old can read it to a 7-year-old.
• Only the FACT box counts. Gran's facts never lie. Her guesses can be wrong, and people at the lodge sometimes fib to keep their own (kind) secrets. Kids cross suspects off their Suspect Board in pencil, only when a FACT says so.
• Not guessable on day 1. Nobody can be sure before Day 21, and there's a twist on the way that rewards careful readers. Write your first guess on Day 1 and check it on Christmas Eve.
• For older kids too. Every page has a Detective Challenge (10+). They range from quick checks to real time puzzles: "is that a fact or just something someone said?", "could they have been there by 6 AM?", and more. Answers are printed upside down at the bottom.
• The answer is in a separate file. The Christmas Eve Reveal stays folded until December 24. Nobody knows the answer in advance, not even the grown-ups.
• Missed a few days? Read them together, in order. The mystery still works: each innocent suspect is cleared by two different FACTs, and no FACT needs an activity to be done. Every Sunday there's a "Week So Far" catch-up box.

Good to know before you buy

• Printing: 27 pages, single-sided, black and white is fine. Staple them at the top, or keep them in a folder. US Letter; A4 works with "Fit to printable area".
• Prep: print and staple, about 10 minutes. No envelopes, no glue, no cutting needed.
• Each evening: about 5–10 minutes. School nights need only a pencil. The three weekend activities (a paper snowflake, which needs scissors and a grown-up, a magic trick and a folded paper tree) are optional.
• Ages: 7–11. Younger kids with a reader; older kids get the daily Detective Challenge.
• Nothing scary: no crime, nothing stolen, and Santa isn't in the story, so it works for a child who knows and one who doesn't.
• Format: digital download (PDF). Nothing is shipped. Print as many copies as you like for your own family.

Playing with grandkids far away?

You become Gran Hollis. The calendar comes with:

• Gran's Reading Copy (55 tablet-size pages, large print): each letter with the day's picture on the same page (read from the tablet and call from your phone or computer, or share your screen so they see the picture), and a Keeper's Page after every letter: what to ask, which activity works on camera, and what not to give away. There is no answer in it.
• The Kids' Pack (2 pages for the grandchildren's house): the Suspect Board with a Fact Tracker, and the Snow Friend Slip for Christmas Eve. Nothing to cut.
• A call schedule for 2 or 3 video calls a week (2 to 4 letters per call). Nothing is tied to a time of day, so time zones don't matter.
• A ready-made message to send the parents, so they know exactly what to print.
• On the last call, you open the Christmas Eve Reveal together and read it out loud.

FAQ

Is it hard enough for a 10-year-old? The FACTs are simple enough for a 7-year-old, so the daily Detective Challenge is where older kids work harder: time puzzles, careful reading, and spotting the difference between a fact and a guess.

Can my child guess the answer on December 1? They can guess, but they can't know before Day 21. Write the first guess on Day 1 and check it on Christmas Eve.

What if we miss a few days? Read the missed pages together, in order. Each of the other suspects is cleared by two different FACTs, so one missed or misread day doesn't change the answer.

Is there anything about Santa? No. Santa isn't in the story.

Can you put my children’s names in the letters? Yes, on request: we add your children’s first names to Gran’s 24 letters, $19 in total instead of $12. Write to us through our Contact page first; we reply with the delivery date, and you pay only if it works for you. The names are used only for your copy.
