A UK Medical Student’s Guide to USMLE Step 1 (Step 2 CK coming soon!)
If you’re a UK medical student thinking about the USMLE, you’ve probably already noticed two things:
- There is an overwhelming amount of information online, much of it written for US medical students.
- Very little of it is tailored to the UK system — our curricula, timelines, clinical exposure, and career decision points are different.
This guide is written to bridge that gap.
I wrote this for pre-clinical and clinical UK medical students (typically years 2–5) who are:
- Curious about the USMLE pathway
- Considering US residency as a future option
- Or simply want to keep doors open early
I have taken USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, and scored in the 98th percentile on Step 2 CK. More importantly, I took these exams as a UK-trained student, juggling UK medical school requirements alongside USMLE preparation.
This is not a textbook.
This is not a hype-filled motivation guide.
It is a short, practical handbook that tells you:
- What the USMLE actually is
- What matters (and what doesn’t)
- How to prepare efficiently without burning out
- How to avoid common mistakes that cost students months of time
You do not need to decide today that you are applying to the US.
But if there’s even a small chance you might, reading this early will save you time, stress, and regret later.
