This St. Patrick’s Day four leaf clover art project is a circular mixed media artwork that combines oil pastel resist, watercolor painting, line design and color theory in one structured lesson. Students work step by step to create a rainbow border, a swirling background and a bold shamrock focal point.

It is made for elementary and middle school art and homeschool families, and works across Grades 2 to 6 (adaptable beyond). Students explore line, shape, color, space, texture and resist techniques while building confidence through guided drawing, and the circular composition makes a strong hallway or bulletin board display.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students begin with a pencil sketch, add hatching for shading, design a patterned border, apply oil pastel color and finish with watercolor resist painting. Along the way they practice the oil pastel resist technique, rainbow color order (ROYGBIV), composition inside a circle, and craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The scaffolded visuals keep it low prep, and it fits St. Patrick’s Day and March art, spring projects, Elements of Art review, guided drawing units, homeschool art and sub plans.
