The twelfth installment of Finding the Names, Volume One — our name-by-name transcription of the slave ship manifests filed at the port of New Orleans, taken directly from the original records at the National Archives (Roll 2, the inward manifests of 1822).
In this installment: 722 entries (721 of them named) on 72 manifests and documents, Roll 2 images 121–240 — the rest of the winter sailings and the start of spring 1822. 198 pages, 6x9, large print.
What the papers themselves say: The brig Arethusa's master swore two of her 122 people "have died on the passage," and Inspector Hudgens's report names them: Levin, No. 26, an infant of four months, and Martha, No. 75, age five — "not found on Board." The same report corrects another baby's name on her mother's word: entered as Martha, "should be Matilda agreeably to her mother's report" — first ordered detained, then, the same day, "No. 82 may be landed likewise." A Mississippi justice's certificate carries one boy: John, age ten, traveling with attorney Hugh W. Wormeley on the schooner Trial, his height never filled in. The brig Hollon's April sailing fills these pages — R. J. Woolfolk's list of forty-six, single-person lists whose printed oaths were altered by hand into "he is" and "she is," and the Drummond family standing together: Goliah, 38, Mary, 36, Robert, 11, Henry, 8, Ann Maria, 4, and Esther Elizabeth, four months old. And two women's names were rescued from a clerk's habit: Lilla, 16, and Dinah, 37, each written in the Female column of her one-person manifest with the Names column left blank.
Art frontispiece: Harriet Powers' Bible Quilt, 1885–86 — sewn by a woman born enslaved in Georgia, from her own memory of the Bible stories. Smithsonian National Museum of American History; public domain.
Every word was transcribed by hand from the National Archives' own scans: Records of the U.S. Customs Service, Record Group 36, Microfilm Publication M1895, Roll 2 (NAID 173909810). No index and no other book was copied. Names are spelled exactly as the clerks wrote them; uncertain readings are marked [?]. Roll 1 is complete in this store (Installments 1–10), and the Complete Set holds the guide and all twelve installments in one free download.
