Afinidades y divergencias. Una mirada semiótica a los estudios de la Comunicación

Resumen: La semiótica ha tenido un papel histórico en muchos debates a propósito de los problemas que vertebran el campo de la Comunicación, y algunos de sus conceptos mantienen una vigencia central en los estudios contemporáneos. Más recientemente, sin embargo, las demás disciplinas de la Comunicación se han inclinado principalmente hacia perspectivas más positivistas y la influencia de la semiótica se ha reducido. El presente artículo describe algunas relaciones conceptuales e incomprensiones que han caracterizado el diálogo entre la semiótica y la Comunicación. Se intenta sugerir igualmente las formas en las que la mirada semiótica puede enriquecer el bagaje analítico de las ciencias de la Comunicación y resolver algunos de los problemas que caracterizan este campo.

Abstract: Historically, semiotics has played a role in many debates about the fundamental problems that shape the field of Communication, and some of its concepts remain central to contemporary studies. Most recently, however, other Communication disciplines have shifted towards more positivist approaches while the influence of semiotics has reduced. This article describes some conceptual relationships and misunderstandings that have characterized the dialog between semiotics and Communication. It also attempts to suggest how the semiotic view can enrich the analytical baggage of the Communication sciences and answer some of the problems that define this field.
