The Boxy Pencil Pouch is exactly what the name suggests: a pouch designed to store your pencils, pens, or sewing equipment. It is created from two flat rectangles, but then you join the dots, and voila! You now have a useful deep pouch, which opens out to form two trays. The seams are bound using my favourite grown-on self binding technique, for a tidy finish. Finally, you get instructions for a cute little zipper pull.

This popular pattern was originally just cut sizes, but has been updated to be full pattern pieces with all of the markings you need to make the sewing quick and easy. The tutorial now comes with 23 photos, showing you the steps in more detail. And it has a video! You can follow along with me while I show you all of my tips and techniques for getting a great finish. Watch it here.

Suggested Fabrics

Fabrics: Cotton quilting weight fabrics; cotton canvas; denim
Lining: Cotton quilting weight fabrics
Fusible interfacing: Any medium weight fusible interfacing, woven or non-woven
Fusible Fleece: Vlieseline H630 low loft fusible fleece; Pellon fusible fleece, or similar
Zipping: Any dress weight zip, either by the yard or ready made. The size listed allows for a longer zip than is needed, to make it easier for a beginner to sew. The zip is cut to length after stitching. If you are using a zipper with metal teeth, you will need to remove some teeth with pliers before cutting.
Waxed cotton cord: This is just a suggestion! You could also use leather cord, faux suede cord, or a rouleau loop of one on the fabrics.
