The Price of Loyalty - Book Five
Eli Freeman grew up in a house that said all of its names but one.
Book Five of the Freeman Legacy Saga.
Born in the last year of the old century, Eli grows up inside a wound he is too young to see: the cousin ruined at Brownsville, whose name the family will not say. When he is old enough, he answers the call his family always answers. He joins the 24th Infantry.
The regiment goes to the border, and then, in the summer of 1917, to Camp Logan outside Houston, Texas, where Black soldiers training for a war to make the world safe for democracy are met by a city determined to keep them in their place. Then comes one night in August, and the largest murder trial in American history, and a December morning the Army tells no one about until it is over.
Cora fights a war of her own, the Armistice comes, Red Summer follows, and the family learns how many sacrifices one people can be asked to make. The book before this one ended with a grave and a silence. This one learns that the country was not finished.
Twenty-eight chapters, from the boy and the locked room to the boy at the door, with a historical afterword that separates fact from fiction.
