Two students each get a different picture of the same park. They ask and answer questions to find ten differences, without looking at each other's page.

HOW IT WORKS

Each picture has a grid (A-D across, 1-3 down). Some things are missing, some have moved and some are different in number, so neither student can find all ten differences from their own page. Students ask and answer questions ("Is there a swing in C2?", "Where is the frog?", "How many flowers are there?"), circle each difference they find and write it in a box on their page. Pairs then compare pages and check with the answer key.

LANGUAGE FOCUS (from the teacher notes)

  • Is there a...? / Are there any...? / How many... are there? / Where is the...?
  • Prepositions of place: in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of, between
  • Numbers 1-5 for counting; grid references (A1-D3)

A Language help box on each student page gives question and answer patterns.

LEVEL AND TIMING

Written for English learners at CEFR A2. About 15-20 minutes in pairs. The teacher notes include support and stretch ideas.

PREPARATION

Print pages 2 and 3 of the PDF: one Student A page and one Student B page for each pair. Pages 4 and 5 are the teacher notes and answer key, for you only. A folder or upright book can be used as a screen. Colour printing is best (all ten differences are still identifiable in greyscale, but the pear and the grandmother figure are faint).

THE TEN DIFFERENCES

Differences are of four kinds: position, missing items, quantity (2 vs 3 ducks, 3 vs 5 flowers) and swapped items.
