Van Walkaround Check App
DVSA can ask for your walkaround check record at a roadside check, and paper defect sheets go missing in the cab. Van Walkaround Check puts the 19 GOV.UK walkaround check areas on your phone or tablet, records nil-defect checks as well as defects, flags any van that must not be driven, and shows on a dashboard whether checks are really being done every working day.
For UK tradespeople, sole traders and small firms with one to ten vans. Not for you if you need drivers' checks synced to an office in real time, photos of damage, a tachograph or operator licence system, or an app on iPhone or iPad.

Works offline in any desktop browser (Windows, Mac, Chromebook) and on Android. iPhone and iPad are not supported yet.
What it does for you
- The 19 check areas from the GOV.UK van walkaround guidance, each with a short "what to look for" note
- Big OK, Defect and N/A buttons for use in the cab, plus Mark the rest OK
- Each defect gets a description and your assessment: Minor (report it) or Dangerous (do not drive), and who it was reported to
- Nil-defect checks are recorded too, with date, time, driver and odometer, as the guidance asks
- Today screen: every van shown as Do not drive, Defect open, Not checked today or Checked OK, with open defects and due dates
- Defects list with Mark fixed: the date, who fixed it and the work done
- MOT, road tax, insurance and service dates per van, amber when close and red when passed
- History filtered by period, van or driver; open, edit, print or delete any check
- NEW in v5: Dashboard with the weekday check rate, checks in the last 4 weeks, open defects and average days to fix, plus charts of checks with and without defects per week, open defects over time, check rate by van and defects by check area. Every chart has a text version for screen readers
- NEW in v5: Calendar file (.ics) with MOT, tax, insurance and service due dates, each with a reminder 14 days before, for Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar
- NEW in v5: Full keyboard use, screen-reader labels, a skip link and high-contrast colours (tested against WCAG 2.2 AA with axe)
- Printable A4 check record with signature lines; CSV export of checks and defects for Excel or Google Sheets; JSON backup and restore
- Checks are refused if an item is missed, a defect has no description, the date is in the future or the odometer is not a number
- Demo data (a plumbing firm with four vans and eight weeks of checks) to try it first
How it works (3 steps)
- Open the app, try the demo, then press Use my data. In Setup add your business, drivers and who defects are reported to; in Vans add each van with its MOT, tax, insurance and service dates (about 5 minutes)
- Each morning, open New check, pick the van and driver, and tap OK, Defect or N/A for each of the 19 areas, then Save check
- Watch the Today screen for vans that must not be driven, mark defects fixed when the work is done, and use the dashboard to see that every van is checked every working day
What's included
- Van-Walkaround-Check.html: the app. One file, opens in your web browser, works offline
- Start-here.pdf: quick-start guide with the 3-step plan and backup tips
- Demo data built in (four vans, eight weeks of checks and defects), so you can try everything first
Compatibility
- Tested in Google Chrome on a desktop (1440 px wide) and on Android phone sizes (390 px and 360 px wide)
- Also runs in current Edge and Firefox, and Safari on Mac
- Not iPhone or iPad yet: Safari on iOS cannot keep the app data from a downloaded file reliably, so we do not support it
- One self-contained file: no installation, no account, no subscription, nothing is sent over the internet

Good to know
- Records are saved in the browser on the device you use. Each device keeps its own records, so keep one Android phone or tablet per van, or one in the office, and download a backup (JSON) every week
- GOV.UK guidance says to keep defect, maintenance and repair records for at least 15 months: keep your backups and CSV exports
- Mark AdBlue, tow bar or tail lift N/A if your van does not have them
- Business licence: use it within one business on as many devices as you like
- FAQ: Can drivers do checks on their own phones and see them in the office? Not automatically. Each phone keeps its own records. Drivers can export CSV or print the record, or use one shared tablet per van.
- FAQ: Is it DVSA approved? No. DVSA does not approve apps. The check list follows the GOV.UK van walkaround guidance and records what it says to record.
- FAQ: Does it check MOT or tax online? No. You enter the dates and the app reminds you; it never connects to DVLA or DVSA.
