INTRODUCTION

I Stayed in Devon for 1 week [16th June 23] on a farm near Malborough – 3 miles south down a very narrow lane. You could see the sea from the converted barn. Soar Mill Cove was about 15 minutes to walk to – see the map on the next page.

The South Hams is one of the most beautiful areas of England. A network of narrow roads link loads of local country villages and communities. There are loads of small beaches and coves which are frequented by locals and later into summer, holidaymakers. Parking is not fantastic at some of these places but the larger beaches can cope better.

Areas covered in this book:-

Avon Estuary – NB Avon means “River” in the Welsh language – there are lots of river Avon’s in the United Kingdom. [Averton Gifford]

Dartmouth – once guarded by a castle and chain defence system against French invaders. Nearby is Warfleet creek.

Salcombe – a typical seaside town and nearby South Sands.

Bantham [A private estate]

Hope Cove / Bolt Head and Bolt Tail
