The fashion and textile industry remains one of the most polluting and exploitative sectors, particularly during the colouring process, which relies heavily on chemicals and water to fix dyes to fibres. Higher education must therefore introduce creative, process‑led alternatives that enhance student learning while raising environmental awareness.
As university teachers we have a complex identity shaped by our discipline and personal histories (Rowland: 2000). My own commitment to sustainability arises from understanding the environmental impact of colouration processes. My research investigates sustainable alternatives to conventional, chemical‑based textile printing by developing natural dye recipes and delivering hands‑on masterclasses for art and design students. In so doing, I promote meaningful, experiential learning and support students in becoming responsible, forward‑thinking innovators in industry.
