Maggie's Gloves

This is my version of my Granny Maggie's gloves - she was constantly knitting and sold whatever she made to shops and agents in Lerwick. She tended to use five colours shading the background of the gloves but I have made these in blocks of three colours. Of course, you can experiment and use as many colours as you like- gloves are an ideal way of using up those scraps of yarn.

The gloves have a twisted rib which looks slightly cabled. Although I have given numbers of rows for the fingers they can be adjusted to suit your own requirements. I often find the little finger too long on the traditional Fair Isle gloves so I have added in a couple of rows to lower the little finger. There are step by step photos showing how to prevent holes between the fingers.

Gauge - The pattern gives the gauge as 30 stitches and 36 rounds over the Fair Isle pattern with size 3mm needles, this is correct but it should say “over 4 inches”.
