HEADSTONE SYMBOLS EXPLAINED

ICONOGRAPHY in graveyards involves the use of symbols and motifs on tombstones and monuments to convey messages about the deceased, their beliefs, and the cultural or religious context of the time.

These symbols serve as a form of visual communication, expressing themes of life, death, and the afterlife.

“Hi Andrew,

I have closely read HEADSTONE SYMBOLS EXPLAINED. I was struck by the very fine range of memorials you have at Dockroyd!

I have read an American work which has little detail to it. I've also read Trevor Yorke's, "Gravestones, Tombs and Memorials", which has some superb pen and ink illustrations. He does cover symbolism but not as thoroughly as your work.

 A great achievement, well done,

John Moffat, Director, National Federation of Cemetery Friends”
