The Football Shirt (BL)

A short, engaging Thai BL story designed to help you make the leap from studying the Thai writing system to actually reading Thai.

The Football Shirt is a Level 2 (L2) title in the Start Reading Thai series. It is intended for learners who already know the basics of Thai script — including consonants, vowels and tone markers — and are ready to build confidence reading longer sentences and more varied natural Thai. The story is presented entirely in Thai script, without transliteration, so you can practise recognising words and patterns directly on the page.

The story follows Conor, an Irish expat who has been living in Chiang Mai for a couple of years. One day, he spots a new neighbour in his condo building wearing the football shirt of Conor's local team back home in Cork. He can't believe his eyes — and it doesn't help that he also thinks the guy wearing it is incredibly cute.

Conor keeps seeing Win around the building but never quite finds the courage to speak to him. Then, at a local language exchange, the two are unexpectedly paired together. Conor suddenly has to practise his Thai with the very person who makes him most nervous, and his attempt to explain that he has noticed Win before doesn't exactly go according to plan. What follows is an awkward, funny and increasingly flirtatious encounter that proves Conor may not be the only one who has been paying attention.

Along the way, you'll encounter practical vocabulary connected with attraction and relationships, meeting new people, condo life, language learning, feelings and reactions, clothing, football and everyday social situations.
