Infographic: Joining Jesus in the Harvest

In John 4 , after meeting the Samaritan woman, Jesus tells His disciples:

“Lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” — John 4:35

Meanwhile, the Samaritans are literally coming toward Him because one woman has told them, “Come, see a Man…”

That gives us a beautiful picture of our part in the now harvest.

We look. Jesus says, “Lift up your eyes.” Harvest begins when we stop seeing people merely as neighbors, waitresses, troublesome relatives, strangers, or people unlike us—and begin seeing people God loves and is already drawing.

We pray. “Pray the Lord of the harvest…” We don't manufacture the harvest. It is His harvest. We ask Him to send workers into what He is already doing.

We sow. Jesus speaks elsewhere of seed being scattered. We speak truth, demonstrate grace, teach Scripture, love people, tell our stories, and make Christ known. Much of ministry is planting seed whose results we may never see.

We reap. Sometimes God allows us to meet someone at the very moment when years of unseen work have prepared that person to respond. Jesus told the disciples:

“I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”

— John 4:38

That keeps us wonderfully humble. When someone responds to Jesus, we may simply be the last person in a long chain of grace.

And we invite. This may be my favorite part of the woman at the well. She didn't have a theology degree. She didn't have all her questions settled. She simply said:

“Come, see…”



That connects beautifully with something you've been wrestling with in Meeting Jesus, Becoming the Church. The woman doesn't merely become a worshiper. She becomes a worker in the harvest. She meets Jesus, is changed by Him, and then carries what she has encountered back to others.
