Program note:
The title contains a not-so-hidden meaning, a not-so-funny joke that I hope captures Nevesdeer's character—alternatingly humorous, confusing, silly, slightly off-kilter, mocking, frightening, and above all discordant.
The piece is punctuated by distinct rhythmic cells assigned to each instrument, plenty of quarter tones throughout the ensemble, raucous multiphonics for the oboe and saxophone, and sensitive dyads for the single reeds that occasionally suggest—but only suggest—tonal relationships.
Nevesdeer was premiered November 19, 2024 at Butler University's Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana by Pam Ajango (oboe), Trina Gross (clarinet), Candice Kiser (bass clarinet), Phil Pierick (saxophone), and Doug Spaniol (bassoon).
