Numberless Word Problems – Addition & Subtraction (Within 5, 10, 20, 100) | Grades 1-2

Ever watch a student stare at a word problem, completely lost, not because the math is too hard, but because they don't know what the question is even asking? This resource is built to fix that.

Numberless word problems take the numbers out of the equation (literally) so students have to actually read the problem and figure out what's going on before they do any math. No more guessing an operation based on keywords or grabbing random digits. They actually have to understand the problem before they can solve it.

All 11 word problem types, covered

This isn't a set of the same problem reworded over and over. You're getting all 11 addition and subtraction word problem structures, with 5 of each type, mixed throughout the set:

  • Join / Add To – Result Unknown (JRU)
  • Join / Add To – Change Unknown (JCU)
  • Join / Add To – Start Unknown (JSU)
  • Separate / Take From – Result Unknown (SRU)
  • Separate / Take From – Change Unknown (SCU)

Why this works

Take the numbers away, and students can't fake their way through a word problem anymore. They have to slow down and ask: what's happening in this story? Is something being added? Taken away? Compared? Understanding should always comes before computation.

No prep or low prep. Use however you need it that day

  • No prep: Print and go. Let students choose their own reasonable numbers, working solo or in small groups. This is a sneaky-good way to build number sense too, since they have to think about what numbers actually make sense in the story.
  • Low prep: Fill in the numbers yourself ahead of time — within 5, 10, 20, or 100 — and hand out a worksheet that's already leveled for your class.

One resource, every level in your classroom

Because you're in control of the numbers, this single set can be used across a wide range of grade levels or abilities:

  • Within 5 or 10 → great for Kindergarten
  • Within 20 → right on target for Grade 1-2
  • Within 100 → perfect stretch for Grade 2

You can also differentiate within the same grade or classroom.

Single-step problems

Every problem is single-step, so it's ideal for building a solid problem-solving foundation before jumping into multi-step problems. I made these worksheets with Grade 1-2 in mind, but they work for any grade that needs a little extra support reading and making sense of word problems

.

Use it for:

  • Whole class instruction
