Mistletoe

The ancient Romans believed that Mistletoe, with its simple shape and delicate berries, represented peace, love, and understanding. They hung it in doorways to protect their homes. An important plant to many cultures throughout the ages, by the 18th century mistletoe had become a Christmas tradition all over the world. The tradition of hanging mistletoe in doorways as a place to kiss is alive, well known, and much loved.

Here, a simple pattern of garter stitch and i-cord, plus some finishing touches, recreate the famous decoration in a way that doesn’t require anyone to risk life and limb shimmying up a tree to bring home their own sprig. A perfect gift topper, hostess gift, or decoration for any Christmas lover, this decoration will last across the years, inspiring many sweethearts’ kisses.

Supplies

US2 (2.75 mm) double pointed needles

5-7 grams of DK weight cotton yarn. Shown in Universal Yarn RicoRumi DK Cotton, color 48/Olive.

Tapestry needle

White glue

12”x12” aluminum foil

2 rubber bands

2-4 pearl beads

12” ribbon - red shown in model

Hot glue gun & glue OR sewing needle and matching thread

Glitter (optional)

A note on yarn selection: because this is an ornament, there is not a gauge swatch. Garter stitch fabric should be fairly dense to help give the leaves shape. A fingering weight yarn would need very small needles and would make a tiny mistletoe, while a larger aran or chunky weight on larger needles would make a giant mistletoe.
