Tales from an Old Fort Town
The book 'Tales from an Old Fort Town' was published by Etz Hayyim Synagogue with financial support from the Jewish Museum of Greece. It can be purchased in physical form via the contact form on their website: https://www.etz-hayyim-hania.org/contact/
All proceeds from the sales of the printed version go to support the historic building, research program, and much-needed community cohesion work at Etz Hayyim.
The book is my personal response to the history of the Greek Jewish community of Crete; a community that played an important part in the life of the island but which, through ignorance, racism, and greed, has now all but disappeared. All the illustrations were originally completed as monochrome pen and ink designs for screen prints. They are a part of my ongoing work on the many histories of the island of Crete.
I was fortunate to experience Shelley Tracey's poetry in another collaborative project and I became aware of the honesty and integrity of her words. I asked her if she would be willing to respond to the images I created for the ‘Tales from an Old Fort Town’ and I was grateful that she agreed. Shelley’s poetry is heartfelt and special.
