This Earth Day Craft and Write pairs a hands-on Earth Day craft with fiction and non-fiction writing. Students follow a tutorial to make the craft, then add their own artistic flavor by choosing from a range of craft elements, so every design turns out a little different.

After the craft, students write about it using planning pages, prompt pages or blank writing pages, then finish with coloring, reflection and a 3 Stars and a Wish. With the adaptable templates and primary and intermediate writing pages, it suits 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. The craft style is inspired by the Ms Artastic YouTube Channel.

HOW TO USE IT

Photocopy the craft elements and put a few out at each table so students can pick the ones they want. Save the unused pieces with the lesson plan for next year, which means less prep and less waste. Use the step-by-step instructions or the PowerPoint to guide students through the craft.

Once the crafts are done, guide students into writing inspired by what they made. Choose the planning, prompt or blank pages that fit your writers, and wrap up with coloring, peer feedback and reflection.
