An mKAL crossover between Aroha Knits and Lady Dye Yarns! The theme of this mKAL is Craftivism.

Te Whēnua is Te Reo Māori for “The Land”. Another meaning of whēnua is placenta, reminding us that the land is a source of nourishment and wellbeing, thus it is in our best interest and our duty to take care of the land, whatever that may look like (including fighting for land rights to be given back to those indigenous to other areas).

This pattern is a top-down triangular shawl featuring four different sections of lace, each representing an aspect of the land. The lace patterns themselves are geared towards advanced beginners who understand the basics of lace knitting (yarn overs, k2tog, ssk and the central double decrease).

The pattern is available in print, mobile and LVA (low vision accessible) versions for a better optimized making experience!

YARN

• 780 - 880 yds/710 - 804 m
• Single-ply fingering
• Lady Dye Yarns, Single Ply Fingering (100% Superwash Merino; 100 g ; 440 yds./400m). 2 skeins in Umbrella.
• Single-ply fingering yarns leave a nice fuzzy halo. Not as elastic as the 4-ply but still bouncy and sturdy.

NEEDLES

• US 5/3.75mm size or size needed to obtain gauge, 32 in./80 cm (or longer) circular needle.
• A long circular needle is recommended in order to accommodate the large number of stitches as the shawl grows.

GAUGE

• 24 sts and 32 rows over 4 in./10 cm in main stitch patterns with needle size and after blocking.
• Gauge is not crucial to this project, but varying gauges will affect yardage and final measurements.
