This fire exit maps and evacuation signs set teaches students to read exit maps, "you are here" dots, exit signs, and meeting spot signs at school and at work.

Why I made this: A former student froze when his new supervisor asked him to point to the nearest exit on the break room map. He had done many drills, but always by following the line. This set practices reading the map and signs on your own.

What’s included:

• A 13 page PDF and an editable Word copy

• A teacher page with a three level table and a 2 week plan

• 3 documents: a school exit map with two ways out, a page of 8 exit and evacuation signs, and a workplace exit map

• Level A ●: 10 cards with 2 choices, in 16 point type

• Level B ■: 10 cards with 3 choices

• Level C ▲: 10 short answer cards

• 3 practice pages, an answer key, a data sheet with a 10 session graph, a try it for real page, and blank cards

How to use it: Read each map together: find the dot, the main way out, the second way out, and the meeting spot. Work one level at a time and check with the codes. Then find the real exit map by your classroom or at a job site.

Who it’s for: High school special education teachers, 18 to 21 program teachers, and job coaches preparing students to read exit maps at school and at new job sites.

Format: PDF, US Letter, 13 pages, plus an editable Word copy. Prints well in black and white.

How this is different: Community + Workplace Safety Signs Task Cards | Functional Reading Life Skills covers many kinds of posted signs. This set goes deeper on one skill: reading exit maps, exit signs, and meeting spots. It has no drill story and no drill steps.
