Story:
I fell in love with what I call Dragon stitch when I was designing my ‘Winter is coming’ shawl. So many people commented when they made the shawl how they enjoyed knitting that part. When it came time to design the South African inspired
patterns, Dragon stitch was just calling to be used. It reminded me of a beautiful mountain range in South Africa called the Drakensberg or Dragon Mountains. I have been hiking many times in these mountains, a really breathtaking part of the world.


PATTERN INFO

Description
Beanie style hat knitted from the bottom up. This hat has Dragon stitch on the brim and a stocking stitch body while strands of colour from the brim are carried up the sides. Simple embroidered flower can be added on afterwards.

Difficulty Level: Advanced Beginner
This is really not a difficult hat, the brim colour is carried up the sides with slipped stitches.

Skills Needed:
Cable cast on, working in the round, simple colour work, decreasing.

Needles
3.5 mm/US 4 circular needles
5 mm/US 8 circular needles (These needles are only used to the cast on)

Yarn
Nurturing Fibres Merino DK Singles (50g; 94m/103yds)
Colour A – used for brim and slipped stitches
Colour B – main colour use for body
You will need 7 small balls of about 1 to 1.5 m of Colour B for the slipped stitches that run up the side of the hat. It is best to prepare these before you start. It might be helpful to use bobbins that are used for colourwork.

Dragon stitch: 20 stitches and 36 rows over 10cm/4” blocked Stocking stitch: 22 stitches and 32 rows over 10cm/4” blocked
