David Ricardo was an early nineteenth-century economist - perhaps not a familiar name for most, but he was a pivotal figure in the development of economics as a discipline, with many of his theories still of great relevance today. He also lived an interesting life, with family drama, grand fortunes and a good deal of politics thrown into the mix.
