This October Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with word and sentence writing practice for kindergarten to grade 2. On each page, students draw an October picture, trace and write the word, trace a simple sentence, and then write their own sentence using the word. A short reminder at the bottom prompts them to check their work.

Drawing first gives young writers something real to talk and write about. The drawings are cozy fall and gently spooky October favorites: owl, pumpkin, sweater, squirrel, apple cider, lantern, leaf, broom, tree, raccoon, fox, cat, hedgehog, potion, candle, spider, cauldron, moon, star, bat, crow, beaver, bear, pumpkin pie and ghost in a jar.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for morning work, literacy centers, art centers, early finishers, sub plans, independent practice or homeschool learning. Print single pages as you need them, or add the booklet cover to make an October write and draw journal that students work through over the month.

The routine is the same on every page: draw, trace, write. Tracing the word and sentence supports handwriting and letter formation, and the final sentence lets students try their own writing with a familiar word in front of them. Students who are not ready for independent sentences can focus on the tracing or share their sentence out loud with an adult.
