🗝️ THE CHARACTER CASE FILE™

TWO PERSPECTIVES. ONE STORY.

Every character has a story. But what happens when two characters see the same world differently?

One might be the hero.

The other might be the villain.

But what if they have more in common than we realise?

Welcome to The Character Case File™, a literary investigation that challenges learners to examine two characters, uncover their motivations and discover how their differences shape a story.

Designed for Grades 6–8, this black-and-white printable funsheet transforms traditional character comparison into an engaging evidence-board investigation.

Instead of simply listing character traits, learners explore the choices, beliefs, relationships and conflicts that make fictional characters interesting.

Because understanding a character means looking beyond what they do — and investigating WHY they do it.

🔎 THE INVESTIGATION

Learners select two important characters from a novel or short story.

These might be a hero and villain, a protagonist and antagonist, or two characters with opposing personalities, goals or beliefs.

Using the evidence-board layout, learners investigate:

01 — IDENTITY

Who are these characters, and what roles do they play in the story?

02 — MOTIVATION

What drives their actions?

03 — GOALS

What does each character want to achieve?

04 — VALUES & BELIEFS

What do they believe is right or wrong?

05 — STRENGTHS

What abilities or qualities make them effective?

06 — WEAKNESSES

What flaws or limitations influence their behaviour?

07 — RELATIONSHIPS

How do they treat other characters?

08 — CHANGE

Do they develop or change as the story progresses?

⚖️ CONNECT THE EVIDENCE

Once learners have investigated both characters, they complete three final challenges.

THE SIMILARITIES

What do these characters have in common?

Learners must support their observations with evidence from the story.

THE KEY CONFLICTS

How do the characters' different goals, beliefs or actions create tension?

THE OVERALL REFLECTION

What does comparing these characters reveal about the story's themes or message?

❤️ WHY TEACHERS WILL LOVE IT

The Character Case File™ offers a visual approach to character analysis while maintaining a strong focus on literary understanding.

Its evidence-board layout allows learners to examine two characters side by side, helping them recognise connections, contradictions and differences.

The final reflection encourages learners to move beyond individual character traits and consider how characters contribute to the meaning of a story.

Suitable for a wide range of novels and short stories, this resource can be used repeatedly with different texts.

Two characters. Two perspectives. One story waiting to be investigated.
