Stay Put Coaster

Description

This is a pattern for a square cup or mug coaster with a flat middle and a decorative border. I have had a lot of coasters and I'm never happy with them. They get sticky from spills, or when there is condensation, the cup slides around or sticks to the coaster. I decided to knit some coasters out of polypropylene yarn so that my cups never stick to my coaster and the coaster stays put on the table!

This is not a reversible coaster, so there is a side intended to face up, and a side intended to face down, where the ends are weaved in. This is shown in the sample photos.

About the yarn

While polypropylene is not a soft, cozy yarn and it is a bit rough to knit with, it can be fun to use because it is bendy and holds its shape. Best of all, it is a bit water repellant, so it makes a great coaster.

Each coaster requires about 20 yards (15-17 grams) of yarn. You can easily make 12 coasters with a single skein of the recommended yarn.

Size

The final coaster should be 4 inches by 4 inches. The border takes about 1 inch on each edge, and a flat stockinette section in the middle creates a flat, stable surface for your cup or mug.

Gauge/Tension

21 stitches and 29 rows equal 4 inches by 4 inches.

US 5 or size to obtain gauge.

This pattern and all sample photos were proudly made without the use of AI of any kind. No text, graphics, pictures, editing, revisions, ideas, or anything else used AI. The low vision version was made with LibreOffice and the 2-page version was made with Inkscape. The photos were taken with the phone app ProShot, which allows me to take photos without unintended modifications or beautification. I have cropped the photos and manually applied a blur to the mug in one photo due to a reflection showing.
