Close-Up of a Red Wild Berry Among Green Leaves
This plant is Potentilla indica, commonly known as the mock strawberry, Indian strawberry, or false strawberry.
While it looks remarkably similar to a true wild strawberry, you can easily tell them apart by the fruit structure and the flowers:
- The Fruit: Mock strawberries point upward, are bumpy, and have a dry, spongy texture with very little flavor (unlike the sweet, juicy, downward-hanging wild strawberry).
- The Flowers: Mock strawberries produce yellow flowers, whereas true wild strawberries bloom with white or pale pink flowers.
