Medieval Pageant – Solo for Cornet/Trumpet and Piano

Step into the world of knights, jesters, and courtly celebrations with this imaginative solo work for Bb cornet or trumpet with piano accompaniment. Written at approximately Grade 6 level, it captures the colour and excitement of a medieval festival.

The piece begins with a bold C minor fanfare, setting the scene with grandeur before leaping into a playful jester-like section, shifting between 5/8, 3/4, and 4/4 for a lively, unpredictable dance. A lyrical interlude in C major follows, evoking the elegance of ladies in flowing dresses passing by.

The music then returns to the knights’ training ground, full of rhythmic energy and quick time changes, before giving way to a flowing piano interlude with a soaring melody over a steady bass. A hopeful C major section drives toward a thrilling finale, featuring fast runs, a triumphant fanfare in C minor, and a climactic top D for the soloist.

This piece offers trumpet and cornet players a chance to showcase both technical agility and lyrical phrasing, making it a striking recital feature or competition work.
