Fanshawe uses one skein of DK or worsted weight yarn. It is particularly designed to show hand painted and variegated yarns to best advantage. The scarf can be made longer as desired, to use up as much of a special skein as possible.

The simple lace of the design draws the knitting into angled sections to play up variations in the yarn. This pattern is intuitive to knit and will work up quickly.

The scarf is designed for variegated yarns and it will look best in a smooth yarn to show the stitch definition. A yarn with yardage of about 200 m (220 yds) per 100 grams is recommended. he pattern includes full charted and written instructions.

This scarf is named for Sir Anthony Fanshawe of the Georgette Heyer novel The Masqueraders. He falls in love with Prudence Tremaine, the heroine-in-disguise, for her courage and intelligence. A calm and otherwise respectable character, he has no hesitation in holding up the coach of the officers of the law when she is falsely arrested.
