EPISODE 5: DON'T GO IT ALONE: FIND YOUR WRITING TRIBE
In this episode, Pamela makes a compelling case for why community is not optional for a developing writer — and then delivers one of the most comprehensive resource guides in the entire series.
Welcome to Episode 5
Writing is solitary work, but it doesn't have to be a solitary journey. A supportive writing community can help you master your genre faster, keep you accountable, keep you inspired, and keep you informed. And on the hard days, it reminds you that you're not crazy for doing this.
Early in my writing career, I tried to figure everything out on my own. Then I joined Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime—an organization dedicated to the advancement of women mystery writers—and everything changed. Not just what I knew, but how I felt about the whole writing journey.
Meeting monthly with other new and veteran writers was inspirational and motivating in ways I hadn't anticipated. Suddenly I was in a room with people who understood the struggle of balancing a demanding career with a burning desire to write. People who had already navigated the query process, survived rejection, and figured out how to keep going anyway. They shared what worked, warned me about what didn't, and cheered me on in a way that friends and family—no matter how supportive—simply couldn't. Because they got it. They were living it too.
You can try to write a book entirely alone. Plenty of people do. But why would you, when there's a whole community of people who've already made the mistakes you're about to make—and are willing to share what they learned.
The writing community is a lot more generous than you might expect. Writers help other writers. You will likely end up building meaningful friendships. All you have to do is show up. That was certainly my experience.
Before we dive into some specific resources, let me say this: everything I'm about to share is just a sampling of what's out there. The writing community is vast and growing every day. A simple online search in your genre will turn up far more organizations, publications, podcasts, and websites than I could ever cover in a single episode. Think of what follows as a starting point, not a complete list.
Here's Your No-Excuses Challenge for Episode 5.
Find one writing organization in your genre and sign up this week. Even if you never attend a single event, the online resources alone are worth it. After that, subscribe to one writing publication, or bookmark one of the podcasts mentioned in this episode. These steps will move you closer to finding your tribe.
