Atlas Chronemica
Instrumentation: clarinet/bass clarinet, violin, cello, piano
Duration: ~7 minutes
“Chronemics” is the study of the role of time in communication. This includes both the individual sense and the larger cultural attitude towards time. Atlas Chronemica seeks to reach an artistic understanding of this concept through the use of multiple slightly different recording tempos. Though the ensemble begins synchronized, each instrument gradually transitions to its own “time language.” The ensuing beauty, chaos, and counterpoint is meant to reflect the vast diversity in cultural treatments of time. The music is also structured to resemble time itself, with a linear melodic line which blossoms and unfolds: writing, rewriting, and developing itself. Through a hazy sense of self-similarity, it is always familiar yet never exactly repeating.
