Most people visit Mongolia in the comfort of a modern four-wheel drive.

We didn't.

Instead, we climbed into a battered Soviet-built UAZ-452 van with our driver, Gambaa, our guide, Victor, and enough optimism to overlook the fact that the suspension had clearly retired years earlier.

For two unforgettable weeks we crossed the vast Mongolian steppe, slept in traditional gers, shared meals with nomadic families, climbed the Flaming Cliffs, wandered through the icy depths of Yolyn Am, and bounced our way across some of the roughest roads we've ever encountered.

Along the way there were sandstorms, questionable toilets, curious camels, unforgettable hospitality, endless laughter and the sort of mishaps that only seem funny once you've survived them.
