#110: The Stitchery | A Frankenstein Body-Horror Homage A 5e One-Shot for Small Groups
The abbey's saint cured death, and never put down the needle. He is one perfect body away from finishing his masterwork, and your table is the freshest material to walk through his door.
The Stitchery is a Frankenstein homage for fifth edition: a Gothic body-horror one-shot in the tradition of Mary Shelley's creator and his creation, built to run in a single evening with zero prep. Your players climb to a remote mountain abbey and find a chapel desecrated by its own healer, a ward where the patients are also the inventory, and a vault where lightning strikes a brass table again and again. Brother Valthor did not die of the plague he once fought. He cut the dying flesh from his own body and sewed in new, and he never stopped, and now the man who swore to heal any ailment is the monster at the bottom of the stairs.

At the heart of the adventure is the Graft system. Preserved body parts wait in jars throughout the abbey, and any character can graft one on for real power at a real cost: a giant's arm that swings at the nearest creature, friend or foe; a cat's eyes that see in the dark but flinch in the light; an ogre's heart that will not stop beating; a serpent's tongue that cannot speak the truth under pressure. Every graft feeds a shared Sutured Mind sanity track that measures how loudly the trapped donor souls are screaming, and when it peaks, the surgeon's voice begins speaking through your own players. It is a signature mechanic you will not find in any other one-shot.
The night branches. Halfway in, the party chooses between the Ward of Whispers and the Undercroft, two very different descents that meet again below, so no two tables walk the same road to the operating theater. And it ends on a real decision, not a dice roll: destroy the surgeon's work and lose his cures forever, carry his knowledge into the world and answer for it, or read the final rite and let the donor souls pour into a willing host. Three endings, and your table owns the choice.
What makes it land is the pity. Brother Valthor is not a cackling villain. He was a good man who did a terrible thing for a good reason and then could not put the needle down, and your players will fight him and feel sorry for him in the same breath. By the end they are holding the very knife he held. That is the trade this book is built to make: real power, a real price, and a choice nobody at the table walks away from clean.
