For this video, I prepared 3 ancient genomes from the Khvalynsk culture from the Eneolithic Saratov Oblast in Russia. All these samples are from the recent Akbari study.

The Khvalynsk culture emerged in the Volga region during the Eneolithic, representing a crucial transitional phase between Eastern Hunter-Gatherers and the later steppe pastoralists. Genetically, Khvalynsk people were largely descended from Eastern Hunter-Gatherers, but already showed early admixture from Caucasus-related populations, forming the ancestral base of what would later become the Yamnaya horizon. Archaeologically, they practiced early animal domestication, ritual burials with grave goods, and possibly the first social stratification seen on the steppe.

Closely related cultures such as Lyalovo and Samara shared similar Eastern Hunter-Gatherer roots, though Khvalynsk stood out for its increasing complexity and southern genetic input. This culture played a foundational role in shaping the Yamnaya, contributing both its genetic profile and cultural innovations—pastoralism, mobility, and hierarchical structures.

It is very possible that Khvalynsk culture was proto-Indo-European speaking.
