INTRODUCTION
This document contains information applicable to all types of heavier-than-air craft when operating in cold climates. Sections I and II of the Handbook of Flight Operating Instructions for each airplane give specific information concerning the operation of oil dilution, heaters, shutters, and other mechanisms incorporated in the particular airplane. This Handbook deals mainly with the essential requirements for the protection of personnel and for handling and protecting the airplane when it must remain grounded for a sufficient period to be affected or immobilized by low temperatures. War Department, Basic Field Manual 31-15, Operations in Snow and Extreme Cold, and Technical Manual 1-240, Arctic Manual, are highly recommended for careful study by all personnel engaged in Arctic flying of any kind.
