Ray knocked a bronze tipped dart in his crossbow. The others followed his lead. David could feel his heart pounding. This was the moment of reckoning. One hundred and fifty-two men, armed with primitive bows and hand weapons, were going to try to annihilate several thousand of the meanest monsters they had ever seen, not exactly a Sunday afternoon picnic.


Silently, each man picked a target. David breathed in deeply, exhaled and then breathed in about half-way steadying his nerves. The pit of his stomach tightened. His job was to keep order among his archers. He wondered if that were possible during the heat of battle. It was important that they did not needlessly fire their bows and waste their precious arrows.


Ray's crossbow dart swished quietly through the air. He watched it speed quietly and menacingly through the air without any visible arc, driving itself between the shoulder blades of a bull’s back. At his whispered command, the others loosed their darts finding targets of their own.
