Avon is an asymmetrical triangular shawl worked sideways from a small cast on. Avon’s wide band of dramatic modern lace is set against a smooth stocking stitch triangle.

Avon’s lace is specifically designed for variegated yarns and the design will work well with high contrast and strongly coloured yarns. It will also look good in almost any other fingering weight yarn.

This shawl is a great option for those special single skeins of yarn as there are plenty of options to cast off early if that is what you need to do to suit your yarn. You can also make a larger shawl if you are not limited by yardage.

The stitches used include single and double yarnovers and single decreases. Wrong side rows are purled, with the exception of the double yarnovers.

The pattern is fully charted and also has line-by-line written instructions.

This shawl is named for the Avon family from Georgette Heyer’s novels These Old Shades and Devil’s Cub. In the books the Duke of Avon and his family stand out from the crowd, as does this unusual and distinctive design.
