This Washington-themed activity day is designed for individuals with developmental disabilities in a day program setting. The day focuses on building life skills, encouraging creativity, and promoting social engagement through a variety of interactive and accessible activities inspired by the state of Washington.

1. Money Skills Activity (Washington Market):

Participants will engage in a mock “Washington Market” where they practice identifying coins and bills, counting money, and making simple purchases. Items can include pictures or representations of Washington products such as apples, coffee, and fish. Using play money, individuals will “buy” items, helping to strengthen practical money management, choice-making, and communication skills.

2. Apple Smoothie Making Activity:

Participants will work together to prepare a simple apple smoothie, highlighting Washington’s well-known apple production. With staff support, individuals will help wash ingredients, measure, pour, and blend. This activity promotes basic cooking skills, following directions, sensory exploration, and teamwork. Adaptive tools and step-by-step visual guides can be used to ensure accessibility and safety.

3. Washington Art Collage:

Participants will create a Washington-themed collage using magazines, printed images, and craft supplies. Collages may include images of mountains, forests, apples, the Space Needle, and other state symbols. This activity supports creativity, fine motor skills, and self-expression. Materials can be adapted to meet individual needs.

4. Washington Word Search:

A simple, large-print word search will feature Washington-related words such as “apple,” “rain,” “forest,” and “Seattle.” Participants can complete the activity independently or with assistance, promoting cognitive skills like attention, visual scanning, and word recognition. Modified versions can be provided for varying ability levels.

5. Famous People from Washington (Identification Activity):

Participants will be introduced to a few well-known individuals from Washington through pictures and simple descriptions. Staff can guide a matching or recognition activity where participants connect names to faces or professions. This encourages memory, recognition, and conversation.

6. Movie Time (Washington Connection):

To conclude the day, participants will watch a movie connected to Washington or featuring themes of nature, community, or creativity. Movie options should be appropriate, engaging, and accessible, with consideration for attention span and sensory needs. This provides a relaxing and social group experience.

Program Goals:

  • Develop functional life skills (money handling, simple cooking)
  • Encourage creativity and self-expression
  • Support cognitive and recognition skills
  • Promote teamwork and social interaction
  • Provide a structured, enjoyable themed experience

Adaptations & Supports:

All activities will be modified to meet individual needs, including visual supports, step-by-step instructions, one-on-one assistance, and sensory-friendly materials. The focus is on participation, enjoyment, and skill-building at each individual’s level.
