Story

A pride of inbred lions is rescued from an illegal zoo in Razgrad, Bulgaria by animal welfare charity Four Paws. Two of the lions are newborn cubs, Terez and Masoud. With no vet equipped to raise lions in Bulgaria, Marina takes on the courageous role of raising the cubs, despite having no prior experience.

Back at the same illegal zoo, adult lion Ivan-Asen has grown up in a tiny enclosure and is in critical condition. He will need expert care for the rest of his life. As the cubs grow, it is time for Marina to say goodbye and get them to FELIDA Big Cat Rescue Centre in the Netherlands, more than 2000 kilometres away. The plan is a winter road convoy crossing into Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, and finally the Netherlands.

But political tensions erupt when government officials stall the paperwork needed for the lions to leave Bulgaria. Moving the national animal of Bulgaria across international borders is not something people in power are willing to allow. A protest forces the Minister of Environment to issue the TRACES document, but only for the cubs. Adult lion Ivan-Asen must stay behind. With the clock running, the convoy races the cubs through Europe in treacherous winter road conditions to keep them in the transport vehicle for the shortest time possible.
