My Honey Baby: A poem for "my" little girl on her 5th birthday. She literally saved my life at the age of 3! I included this at the end of my song, You Held the Candle ('til the lights came on) because they just went together.

This is about my ex-girlfriend's little girl. I met them when she was 4 months old & got to play daddy for 5 years. I wrote this in her 5th birthday card. I was running late for her party and got there with a blank card. In the back room I started to scribble something...and this came out in about 20 minutes. For a 5 yr old, I think she got it.

Let me tell you a little story about her.

When I was about 30 years old I got a headache one day that gradually worsened over the next 10 days. By the 7th day I was flat on the couch or in the bed. On the 10th day I was down at their house on a Saturday and finally got off the couch & went to bed about 10 PM.

As I lay there the pain in my head greatly intensified. It felt like a needle covered sledgehammer was banging me in the head. When I’d breathe, the rising & falling of my chest & my head moving a hair or two was excruciating. Then, all of a sudden, it felt like an ant was crawling around in there.

I had sprung a leak. The pressure increased so to where it felt like my head was as big as a basketball. After about half an hour, I couldn’t understand how my eyeballs hadn’t popped out onto my chest yet. I was kinda hoping for it at that point to relieve the pressure.

As I laid there paralyzed in pain, I knew I was gonna die. I couldn’t move or holler for my girlfriend to call 911. She laid there asleep beside me while I tried to thump her awake with my pinky finger…the only thing that I could move without pain.

Knowing I was dying I started cussing God. I ranted & raved in my mind on the 30 years of screwing me he’d done & now with exactly zero accomplishments, as hard as I had always tried, he was just gonna take me in the middle of the night. Poof…gone. I wouldn’t get to say goodbye to my mom, my girlfriend or her little girl or my friends & family nor tell them all how much I loved them. My flame was just gonna be blown out, just like that. Gone.

Then I started trying to bargain with him. Maybe I could work on my patience or my quickness to judge or try and be kinder to everyone. I wasn’t bad at any of those things…but hey, just tell me & I’ll do it. Give me another shot.

As I laid there, what I call Sour Dread came over me. Knowing it was about over and knowing that I hadn’t accomplished a damn thing in this life & wouldn’t get another chance, was almost more painful than what was going on in my head. I looked down at the clock at the foot of the bed, & it read 4:00 AM. I’d been in this pain for about 5 hours. Then, all of a sudden, I found myself standing in whiteness. Just white everywhere. No walls, no floors, just white.

I lived an hour from my girlfriend’s house where I worked near where I lived & she worked down where she lived. We mostly just saw each other on weekends and holidays. When I'd go to leave on Sundays when I was down there, I would be kissing Momma goodbye, and I’d feel a little pair of hands grab my hand & then a tug on my arm. I’d look down & look into my honey baby’s big brown eyes & at her beautiful little face. She’d say, “StaaaEEEaaayyy”, hahaha, like she was on a roller coaster or something.

So…I’m in this whiteness & feel that ole familiar tug on my arm & look down & it’s her. I look at her beautiful loving little face & into her calm angel eyes…& she says, “StaaaEEEaaayyy”. I was instantly back in bed. I looked at the clock & it read 4:15. I thought my basketball head was gone but was too scared to move at first. Then I moved a hair, then two. I moved my fingers, then my hand then my head. It was gone. The pain was gone, the leak had been plugged! I climbed into her bed & snuggled her up & finally went to sleep.
