You've studied Spanish. So why are there still so many words you don't understand in Guatemala?

You know dinero, but everyone says pisto.

You learned perro, but you keep hearing chucho.

And suddenly, the Spanish you studied doesn't feel like enough.

That's exactly why I created Guatemalan Spanish: Essential Nouns for Real-Life Conversations.

This ebook will help you recognize and understand 150+ words Guatemalans actually use in everyday conversations — including words you probably never learned in Spanish class.

Inside the ebook, you'll get:

150+ essential Guatemalan nouns

English translations

Real-life examples in Spanish

Cultural explanations and context

Pronunciation guidance

Neutral Spanish equivalents — so the words work even outside Guatemala

Clear labels for formal, informal and vulgar words

Many of these words are also used across Latin America — so what you learn here goes beyond Guatemala too.

So instead of wondering "What does that mean?" when someone says something unfamiliar, you'll have the vocabulary and context to follow the conversation with more confidence.

For example, you'll learn words like:

pisto — money

patojos — kids

goma — hangover

vuelto — change

chucherías — snacks

…and 150+ more words used in everyday life in Guatemala.

This ebook is especially for you if:

You've studied Spanish but Guatemalans still use words you've never learned.

You have Guatemalan family, friends or a partner and want to understand them more naturally.

You're traveling to Guatemala and want to understand everyday conversations.

You work with Guatemalans and want to communicate with more confidence.

You want to understand not only what a word means, but when and how Guatemalans actually use it.

You know basic Spanish (any level) but want to sound less like a textbook and more like a local.

Created by Pilar Argueta, a Guatemalan Spanish teacher and founder of Study Spanish Anywhere.

This isn't another textbook vocabulary list. It's a practical guide to the words that make Guatemalan Spanish sound like… Guatemalan Spanish.

Stop feeling like an outsider in conversations that matter to you. Start understanding the Spanish people actually speak.

A Helpful Guide to Guatemalan Spanish

I really like that this ebook focuses specifically on Guatemalan Spanish. It’s a useful way to learn words and expressions you may actually hear in Guatemala, especially if you want to better understand local speech and sound a little more natural when you’re there.

A very useful book

This ebook contains a lot of essential nouns for real-life conversations in Guatemala with examples of how each word is used in conversation. I like that it even gives you words that you might not use polite conversation because it’s helpful to be able to understand them. These words are marked in red. Mil gracias Pilar, por este ebook tan útil.

Thank you so much, Christine! I love that you mentioned the marked words — I wanted people to actually understand real conversations, not just the "polite textbook version." So happy it's been useful for you! 💛

Catalina

Dit boek is de ultieme survivalgids! In plaats van verward te kijken als iemand '¿Qué onda?' roept, geef ik nu antwoord alsof ik in de straten van Antigua ben opgegroeid. Mijn nieuwe vriendin Catalina is zwaar onder de indruk en ik voel me een echte chispudo. Een absolute aanrader voor iedereen die meer wil zijn dan een gewone toerist!"

Dank je wel, Henk! 🙌 So glad Catalina was impressed! (English translation: "This book is the ultimate survival guide! Instead of standing there confused when someone says '¿Qué onda?', I can now answer like I grew up in the streets of Antigua. My new friend Catalina was seriously impressed — I finally feel like a real chispudo. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be more than just a tourist!")
