AP African American Studies- Topic 3.17: Afro-Caribbean Migration
Let your class explore the relationship between the sugar economy and Caribbean migration during the Nineteenth century. This packet was adapted from a lesson from inmotionaame.org called "Bitter Sweet Legacy Lesson Plan: Afro-Caribbean Americans and the Sugar Economy".
In this three-part activity, invite students to examine how the collapse of the sugar economy stimulated Caribbean migration. Students will begin by analyzing the price of sugar over time and its connection to production, followed by answering two short-answer questions after reading a short narrative by a plantation worker who explains a brutal day in the life this dehumanizing work. Finally, students should divide into groups to conduct research and present a brief oral presentation on how the production of sugar and the migration of people of African origin have been intertwined from the sixteenth century to the present. This assignment intends to deepens historical understanding while fostering research and presentation skills.
