Why Diagnosing One Man Cannot Explain a Democratic Crisis

In 1964, a magazine polled psychiatrists on a presidential candidate's mental fitness. The profession was embarrassed enough that by 1973 it had banned the practice outright.

You have probably broken that rule this week.

"What is wrong with him?" is the question millions now ask about the 45th and 47th president of the United States, and this essay takes the fear behind it seriously. Then it turns the question around. A diagnosis, even if anyone were entitled to offer one, could not explain why parties stopped screening candidates, or why tens of millions of voters found a promise of strength persuasive across three elections. One personality cannot build all of that. So what did?
