Fishes of the Amazon Poster

Since 2015, I've been working on a multi-year project in the Peruvian and central Amazon. Our goal is to work out some taxonomic knots, and describe a small killifish from Peru. It turns out these knots were a lot bigger than initially expected, and four trips later we still aren't quite done. Dang, I guess I have to go fish the Amazon, again!

Although we are working with killifishes, we always try to photograph everything we collect. Sometimes fishes are entirely too big, or dangerous, or for whatever reason we aren't equipped to photograph them (I've been shocked by an electric eel once, and am in no rush to do it again!). Most of the time however we are able to, and attached is a poster I made for my office of all of the usable photos I have taken to date. People really seem to like it, so I thought I would share it here.

There are 238 fishes included on this print, although many are undescribed, and some may be duplicates. Identifying fishes in this area of the world is difficult. Often fishes that are historically grouped together and look similar are genetically quite different. Other times fishes that look different are genetically identical. If you see duplicates on this poster, we have reason to believe they are different, but the jury is still out.
