Impromptu (2006/2026)
-for String Quartet (two version - 2Vln/Vla/VC and 2Vln/Vla/DB)
Duration: approx. 3 1/2 minutes
Difficulty: Moderate
Download includes full scores for both versions (2 Violins, Viola, Cello; and 2 Violins, Viola, Double Bass) and all performance parts.
Impromptu formed the second of a short set of three pieces for string quartet, each taking the form of a processional or entrance piece. While the three pieces shared loose musical connections which warranted their playing as a set, the ultimate purpose was that they might act individually as a prelude or entr’acte to an event or concert.
The music begins with a lilting melody in the violin which, as the piece progresses, weaves its way gently throughout the ensemble, exploring different keys, modes and meters along its journey. It is music imbued with a sense of searching and discovery.
Please note - This edition of the score and parts contains the full score and parts to two different versions of the work - the original for String Quartet (2 Violins, Viola and Cello), and the 2026 arrangement for 2 Violins, Viola and Double Bass. The Violin 2 and Viola parts have slight changes requiring specific parts depending upon whether the ensemble is a ‘regular’ string quartet with Cello, or a quartet with Double Bass.
