Description
It was a typical morning in the bustling city, with cars zooming by on the streets and pedestrians hurrying to get to work. Paul Kramer was driving his beloved red Fordiga to his job at the accounting firm downtown. As he merged onto Park Avenue, something strange began to happen. At first, Paul didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. But then he glanced in his rearview mirror and did a double take. The cars behind him appeared to be slowly shrinking down to the size of toy models! Paul rubbed his eyes in disbelief. When he opened them again, he gasped. It was real. The cars were decreasing in size by the second.
Paul's own red Ford started to vibrate and rumble. He felt it compact down around him, the seats, dashboard and steering wheel morphing to fit his rapidly miniaturizing body. In a matter of moments, Paul found himself squeezed into a car no bigger than a Hot Wheels vehicle, still speeding along the road. All around him, the other shrunk-down cars swerved wildly, their tiny occupants screaming and crying out in panic. Paul gripped the tiny wheel with white knuckles, struggling to maintain control as the now gigantic landscape rushed by in a disorienting blur. He managed to pull over to the curb and put the car in park with shaking hands. Everywhere around him, the shrunken vehicles were stopping, emptying out their diminutive drivers and passengers. Tiny men in shrunken business suits stumbled out onto the sidewalk, some still clutching briefcases and cellphones. They looked around in shock at the towering skyscrapers and looming pedestrians. Paul clambered out of his car and stared up at the immense concrete wall of the curb. At his reduced size, it was like standing at the base of a mountain. He took a deep breath to calm his racing heart, then began to make his way towards the sidewalk, wondering what he should do next. Around him, the other miniaturized men called out to each other in panic and confusion. "What's happening to us? How do we get back to normal size?" Just then, the click-clack of high heels on concrete filled the air. Paul glanced up to see a pair of long legs clad in black stockings striding past, the hem of a woman's skirt swishing at knee-level. The men gasped and scurried to get out of the way of the approaching feet. But some were too slow. A stiletto heel came down and crushed a tiny man beneath it, his legs kicking feebly before going still. Another tried to scramble away but was stepped on, the sole of a pump grinding into his face. All around Paul, men were being flattened beneath the feet of oblivious women rushing to and from work, heedless of the miniature human lives they were extinguishing with each step. He watched in horror as a man in a gray suit had his head popped like a grape between the toes of sandals. Paul knew he had to get out of there. He took off running, sprinting and leaping over cracks in the concrete that were like chasms to him. All around him, the screams of his fellow tiny men filled the air as they too ran for their lives. Some men got tangled in the hems of women's skirts as they tried to take cover beneath them. Paul watched a man stare up as a woman's dress was hiked up past her waist by a gust of wind, revealing the fact that she wasn't wearing panties. The man's eyes went wide and his mouth opened in a silent scream before her bare foot mowed him down. Paul's own foot slipped on a discarded gum wrapper and he went tumbling across the sidewalk. He sat up and found himself face to face with an enormous balding head and scraggly beard hovering inches from him. He scrambled away as a homeless man's massive, filth-encrusted sneaker came down, narrowly escaping being crushed. Reaching the edge of the sidewalk, Paul clambered down the sheer face of the curb to the gutter below. He huddled in the muck of discarded trash and debris, his heart pounding as he caught his breath. He had escaped, but he knew he couldn't stay here. He needed to find safety and figure out what to do. As he pondered his next move, a shadow fell over him. Paul looked up to see a beautiful woman in a red business suit looming over him, her high heels planted on either side of him. He gulped, knowing that at his current size, the slightest step could end his life.
