Rayne is a single-skein lace shawl designed especially for variegated or hand-painted yarns. This shawl design will play very well with variegated yarns with medium contrast, tonal colourways and also gradients or striping yarns.

The shawl is asymmetrical, starting with a small cast on and increasing along one edge. Rayne can be extended if you want to use up as much as possible of your wonderfully coloured variegated yarn.

The shawl uses a simple twisted decrease, yarnovers and a lifted increase to create a fabric that highlights the variegations of the yarn.

The pattern is fully charted and also has line-by-line written instructions. Both versions have been thoroughly tested by an excellent crew of knitters.

Rayne has a Low Vision Accessible version. This version is written in 24 point Arial in black text and it has no italics. All of the directions are fully written out.

A wool or wool blend yarn with yardage of about 365m/395yd per 100 grams is recommended.

This shawl’s design references the Rayne family from the Georgette Heyer novel Sylvester. The novel’s main characters travel from England to France and back on the packet boat and the lines of twisted lace in this design remind me of the tumbling seas of the English Channel.
