Supertrend Explained — Trail the trend (PDF Guide)

You read that Supertrend has two settings, so you spend an evening trying ATR Length 7, then 14, then 20, and the chart barely changes. You conclude the indicator does not respond to settings and go looking for a different one. It does respond - to the other input, and dramatically.

Measured across 28,800 real bars: Factor swings the flip rate nearly sixfold. ATR Length, across a sixfold range of values, moves it by about two per cent. This is a 40-page PDF that teaches Supertrend from the first thing you see on the screen through to a written strategy with an entry, a stop and an explicit rule for when the trade is wrong.

Nothing is taught underneath a chart. Every label sits on the candle, the line or the level it is describing, on real market data. WHAT'S INSIDE

- Which of the two inputs actually matters — Factor takes the flip rate from 6.25 to 1.08 per 100 bars. ATR Length moves it from 2.56 to 2.50. Both measured, not asserted.

- The colour tells you the trend with no interpretation — Green below price, red above, and a flip is the line jumping to the other side. The most readable indicator in this series.

- Its real job is the trailing stop, not the signal — On a real 150-bar window it held one position through the whole trend without a single flip.

- Why it will never call a top — It is a follower and it is late by construction. Shown on a real window where the flip arrived 25 bars after the high.

- Supertrend against Parabolic SAR — Same job, opposite philosophies. On identical data Parabolic SAR flipped 3.2 times as often.

- What happens in a range — Whipsaw, and lowering the Factor makes it dramatically worse. The failures are counted rather than left out.

WHAT YOU'LL BE ABLE TO DO

- Load the built-in rather than the community script above it.

- Read direction from the colour without interpreting anything.

- Change Factor deliberately, knowing what it does to the flip rate.

- Stop wasting time on the input that barely moves the chart.

- Use the line as a trailing stop instead of as an entry signal.

- Recognise the market where it whipsaws, before it does.

Supertrend is a clue, not a crystal ball. It describes what price has already done. This guide contains no win-rates, no backtest results and no promises about what you will make, because nobody can verify those and you should not trust anyone who prints them.
